This combination elementary/middle school site in North Fulton County provided many design challenges. Protection of the perennial stream bisecting the site was a critical design parameter. Several retaining walls were necessary to protect this important resource, while still meeting the rigorous program requirements. The two schools are connected with one boulevard-style drive, with each school having separate athletic facilities.
The athletic facilities for the middle school include a multi-purpose playfield, a 5-lane track, and a softball field. Given the topography of the site and the proximity to the stream, the middle school athletic facilities are located on the opposite side of the stream from the school, and are connected by a vehicular stream crossing and pedestrian bridge. The stormwater runoff is treated by several stormwater management facilities with integrated sand filters for pollutant removal prior to discharging into the perennial stream.
